Snap Election - Register To Vote #Power2Vote

Apr 19 2017 - 3:54pm

Following today's vote, there will be a general election held on June 8th 2017. We have re-launched our #Power2Vote campaign to encourage people from Black and Minority Ethnic communities to register to vote.Findings from the Electoral Commission illustrates that "areas with a high concentration of certain demographics – students, private renters and especially young adults" – are particularly in danger of having low registration numbers and Ethnic Politics data shows that Ethnic Minorities are less likely to register to vote than their white counterparts. We want to make sure we do all we can to help people access democracy.

“The Selby Centre has over 500 people coming through their doors everyday, some who are accessing services to meet their complex needs. We are able to reach some of the most marginalised people in North London and feel that registering to vote is a vital element of belonging to society. We are keen to do all we can to help.” – Says Sona Mahtani – CEO of the Selby Trust.

We will be working towards removing barriers to enable more people to register to vote including providing access to the internet, having a range of people on hand who speak different community languages and explaining the process. TNot registering to vote does not just affect your ability to vote, but can impact your credit rating, ability to get a mortgage or loan and a mobile phone contract. You can now register to vote online by clicking here (National Insurance number needed) or if you need language assistance you can call the Selby Trust for an appointment by calling 0208 885 5499.
