Community Organising is the work of bringing people together to take action around their common concerns and overcome social injustice. Community Organisers reach out and listen, connect and motivate people to build their collective power.
This interactive quality assured community organising course will help you to develop the skills and confidence to start listening to people in your community as the starting point for a community organising process.
The aim of the course is to support participants to develop the skills and confidence to engage in listening in the context of community organising, either with family and friends or in the community.
Our 5 learning objectives aim:
- To gain a deeper understanding of the importance of listening in the context of community organising.
- To begin to develop the skills and self-awareness required for listening
- To understand how the reflection process can be used to improve listening practice
- To prepare participants for the practicalities of listening in a community.
- To consider next steps in listening

This training, although open to all, follows on from the "Introduction to Community Organising" workshops that we have delivered in the past and most recently in January 2019. The training is ideal if you’re new to the community organising approach, or if you just want a refresher on Listening Skills as a whole.
During the training we explore the CO Ltd framework with a focus on not just door knocking and listening one to one, but also the importance of listening throughout the community organising process. It is really important that we use this opportunity to tell stories of listening through community organising – how it helps us to connect people, to identify leaders, develop strategy, to build power, to negotiate with decision makers etc, - these can either be our own stories or from other organisers experiences.
The training will give participants various practical listening exercises, where they are encouraged to reflect on their experience by thinking about what helped them and what hindered them. As we capture each reflection we note down the learning in the form of a guideline – thereby beginning the development of some Guidelines for Effective listening.

This training is free. It is run by The Selby Trust Social Action Hub and supported by Community Organisers Ltd.
This course is approved as quality training provision by Certa and as Professional Development by CPD. Certification for this can be achieved through completion of the full 1 day course.
There are no geographical restrictions and everyone is welcome to attend.
