David Lammy Visits Selby Centre

David Lammy, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, as well as Member of Parliament for Tottenham, visited the Selby Centre on Thursday 31 October 2024. He spoke to our staff, the community, and different organisations and services from across our centre.

David Lammy’s first stop on the site tour was to the Selby Food Hub, which continues to serve between 130 and 150 families per-week. There, he met with Food Hub users and volunteers, and heard about our wider wrap-around support package which aids those most in need, as well as our IT and digital skills training programme and 1-2-1 tailored employability support.

David Lammy then visited the Bull Lane Playing Fields, which form the focal heart and centre point of the new Selby Urban Village. We’re working in partnership with Haringey Council to redevelop the centre and the land around our existing site to create a new 'Selby Urban Village.'

The new centre and community-focused scheme will provide a high-quality Selby Centre, as well as affordable housing for Haringey residents and improved sports facilities on Bull Lane, which David Lammy MP supports.

As part of the tour, David also visited 5E, a GLA funded training provider,  with  professional IT courses and apprenticeship programme.  They deliver ICT training, job search provision, employability skills, basic skills training, and work-based learning, speaking to 5E operations Manager Amit and team about the programme and courses in place, as well as also visiting Selby ABC, our Amateur Boxing Club based on site, as both organisations delivered multiple sessions and roles to local youths.

David Lammy spoke to Head Coach and Founder of the club, Paulo, about the impact the club has in supporting local youth and the community, as well as many of the amateur boxers.

Paul Butler, Chief Executive of Selby Trust, said:

“It was fantastic that both users and those working across various services delivered at the centre were able to share and showcase the impact of the hard work that goes on across Selby with David, who was born and grew up locally.

“We want our community to be engaged with what is going on in the world around them, so it was great that David was able to listen and answer their questions from a place of personal experience and hope for the future.
The next few years provide an exciting backdrop for us at Selby. In partnership with Haringey Council, we’re creating the Selby Urban Village, which will revitalise this overlooked part of north London and deliver the lasting impact local people need.
With new sports facilities, affordable housing, enhanced spaces for business to thrive, and improved community facilities, our vision for the Selby Urban Village will create opportunities for connection, inspiration, and learning for all. We continue to engage with David Lammy as we progress through the development”
